(Intravascular Sonothrombolysis using a Forward-Viewing Transducer)

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the number one cause of death and the search for more effective diagnosis and treatment techniques has been of a great interest. Intravascular ultrasound present a great potential in imaging and therapy for CVD and unprecedented challenges to transducer technology. In this talk, forward-viewing intravascular transducers with center frequency < 1 MHz were designed, fabricated and tested for effective and safe intravascular sonothrombolysis. Despite the small aperture (diameter <1.5 mm) with respect to the wavelength (2.2 mm), and peak-negative-pressure of 1.35 MPa with a corresponding mechanical index of 1.67 was achieved. Significantly enhanced thrombolysis rate was observed by using microbubbles in in-vitro tests. This small aperture low frequency transducer can also be promising for minimal invasive surgery.

Dr. Xiaoning Jiang is a University Faculty Scholar and a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at North Carolina State University. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Jiang received his Ph.D. degree from Tsinghua University (1997) and his Postdoctoral training from the Pennsylvania State University (1997-2001). He was the Chief Scientist and Vice President for TRS Technologies, Inc. prior to joining NC State in 2009. Dr. Jiang is the author and co-author of two books, 5 book chapters, 9 issued US Patents, 94 peer reviewed journal papers and over 90 conference papers on piezoelectric ultrasound transducers, ultrasound for medical imaging and therapy, drug delivery, ultrasound NDT/NDE, smart materials and structures and M/NEMS. Dr. Jiang is a member of the technical program committee for a few international conferences including IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium (TPC-5), SPIE Smart Structures and NDE, ASME IMECE and IEEE NANO. He also serves as the UFFC representative to IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC), NanoAcoustics Technical Committee Chair for IEEE NTC, IEEE NTC Distinguished Lecturer (2018), an editorial board member for the journal Sensors and a senior associate editor for the new ASME Journal of Engineering and Science in Medical Diagnostics and Therapy.
江小宁,博士,美国北卡州立大学(North Carolina State University)机械与航空工程系教授, 生物工程系兼职教授。其研究领域包括医学超声成像和治疗超声,药物输送,超声NDT / NDE,智能材料以及微/纳精密加工制造等。江小宁教授于1997获得清华大学精密仪器工程博士学位,1997~2001在宾州州立大学(Pennsylvania State University)从事博士后工作,后出任TRS公司首席科学家和副总裁,于2009年加入美国北卡州立大学。截至目前,其已发表超过94篇高等级期刊,90篇国际会议论文和9项美国授权专利。他是IEEE超声学研讨会(TPC-5),SPIE智能结构和NDE,ASME IMECE,IEEE NANO, UFFC纳米技术(NTC)等国际会议和组织的技术委员会委员,IEEE Nano Acoustics和IEEE NTC主席,并获2018 IEEE NTC杰出讲师奖。此外,江小宁教授为国际知名期刊Sensors编委和新ASME医学诊断和治疗工程科学的高级副主编。
